Explained

What UGC ads are

UGC stands for user-generated content. A UGC ad borrows its look: someone films themselves with a phone, in their car or kitchen, and talks about a product or reacts to it. No studio, no brand voice, no logo in the first frame.

On TikTok and Instagram that look is the point. People scroll past anything that looks like an ad; a person in a normal room reads as a post. The ad gets a second of attention, and the hook decides whether it gets more.

UGC videos are the same thing without the ad budget behind them: organic posts in the same style. Brands often post them first and turn the ones that hold attention into paid ads.

Formats

Six UGC video types that sell products

Most product UGC is one of these. They all start with a hook.

The reaction

A creator reacts with a gesture (a “shh”, an eye-roll, a facepalm) while the hook text explains why. Silent, short and readable in any language.

Problem and fix

The everyday annoyance first, then the product that ends it. Works for anything that removes a hassle.

Before and after

Then and now, side by side or in a cut. Strong when the result is visible.

The honest review

A creator says what they liked and what surprised them. Needs a real voice, and real customers if it’s a testimonial.

Unboxing

The first look at the product, packaging and all. Good for gifts and anything with a satisfying reveal.

Demo or tutorial

The product in use, step by step. Often the second half of the other formats.

Anatomy

What every good UGC ad has

Whatever the format, the same four beats.

  1. 1

    The hook (first 1–3 seconds)

A reaction and a line of text that opens a question: “nobody talks about this bottle”. Under 12 words, lowercase, no brand name.

  2. 2

    The turn

The answer starts: the product appears, in a real moment, not on a white background.

  3. 3

    The proof

The product doing the thing: ice still there after a day, the app solving the task, the before and after.

  4. 4

    The way to buy

On TikTok Shop or in an ad, the button does the work. In organic posts, a short line or a pinned comment.

How to make them

UGC ads without hiring creators

Viral UGC makes the reaction format for your product, in batches.

  1. 1

    Pick your creator

Choose a few traits and one of four AI-generated faces. The same creator plays in every video.

  2. 2

    Add your product

Paste your product page, or describe your product or service yourself.

  3. 3

    Pick viral gestures

Up to four reactions, each becomes a clip in a place you choose: car, kitchen, gym, café and more.

  4. 4

    Pick your hooks

Claude writes four texts per clip, made for its gesture. Every text you tick becomes its own ad, with your demo at the end.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What are UGC ads?

UGC ads are ads that look like user-generated content: a person filming with a phone, talking or reacting to the camera, in an everyday place, instead of a polished brand video. They run as paid ads or organic posts on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

What is a UGC video?

A short video in the style of a regular user: selfie angle, natural light, a real room, text on screen. It can be filmed by a customer, by a paid creator, or generated with AI, as long as it looks native to the feed.

Why do UGC ads work?

They don’t look like ads, so people don’t scroll past them on reflex. A person reacting to a product feels like a recommendation, and the format lets you test many hooks cheaply, which matters more than polish on TikTok.

How long should a UGC ad be?

As short as the message allows. The hook has to land in the first one to three seconds; many product UGC ads run 8 to 20 seconds: a hook, the product in use, done. Silent reaction videos are among the shortest, with a 4-second hook and the demo right after.

How do I get UGC ads without hiring creators?

Ask customers for videos (slow, and you can’t choose the hook), or generate them. Viral UGC makes UGC-style videos with an AI creator: a viral gesture, your hook text and your demo clip, with as many texts per clip as you want.

Can I run AI-made UGC as ads?

Yes, on TikTok and Meta, as long as it’s labelled where the platform asks for AI-generated content and doesn’t pretend to be a real customer’s testimonial. Show the product honestly; let the hook create the curiosity.

What does it cost with Viral UGC?

1 credit per clip (Premium quality 2). Hook texts and finished videos are free, so one clip with four texts gives you four ads to test. A free account comes with 2 credits; Viral UGC is invite only while in early access.
